What to watch

Why is the Colosseum in Rome so famous? It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built and the largest still standing today. The nearly 2000 year old site has been witness to executions, animal hunts, and of course, gladiator fights! Its elliptical (meaning circular) structure made up of rounded arches allowed the audience to enter and leave the arena from any direction. This ingenious design is testament to the Roman's architectural prowess and why it's our film of the week. Learn how the Romans designed their own system of air conditioning to keep the 50,000 spectators cool in the Mediterranean heat.

Did You Know...

You can actually find a little piece of Ancient Rome in London? The City Wall Vine Street is the newest museum to open in London and houses a section of Roman wall which dates back to 190AD. The wall was discovered in 1905 when an office block was built on the site. This has since been demolished and replaced with a gallery which houses a vast array of archeological objects recovered from the site. During the Roman Empire, the city was known as Londinium and was the capital of Roman Britain. Ancient Roman sites are found regularly, such as this rare mausoleum discovered just this week!
